The Polestar and Volvo era is over

Back in June, Volvo announced that its high-performance Polestar division would be turning into a standalone brand for high-performance electric cars. A big announcement about Polestar’s future is expected in October, but today it looks like we’re at the end of the direct relationship between Volvo and Polestar.

Polestar posted a quick message on its Instagram page, “The End” which signals the end of the collaboration which started in 1996. Early on, Polestar and Volvo partnered in motorsport, but then eventually the partnership included the introduction of Polestar-tuned Volvo models, like the Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar. In July 2015, Volvo bought Polestar and now, two years later the brand is being spun off to create “offer electrified cars to the world’s most demanding, progressive drivers.”

“Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.

We still have to wait until next month to see what Polestar is planning, but there is a rumor about a 600 horsepower coupe.
