Starting in 2019 all Volvos will be electrified

Volvo has announced that in just two years every model that it sells will have some sort of electrification. That means that every model will either be a full-electric model, plug-in hybrid or a mild hybrid.

Volvo will offer five fully-electric cars by 2021

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson stated. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”

Today Volvo is already on its way to electrifying its lineup with plug-in hybrid versions of the XC90, S90, V90 and XC60 models. The upcoming XC40 compact SUV will also get a plug-on hybrid version. In the not too distant future all models built on Volvo’s scalable product architecture (SPA) and its compact modular architecture (CMA) will feature either a full-electric, plug-in hybrid or 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain.

Volvo is planning on having at least five fully electric vehicles in its lineup that will arrive between 2019 and 2021. Three of the new electric cars will be branded as Volvos, while two other models will come from the new Polestar stand-alone brand.

“This is about the customer. People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”
