VW has unveiled its latest I.D. electric concept – the I.D. CROZZ concept, which is going to debut this week at the Shanghai Motor Show. The concept previews a new electric crossover, which will be part of a range of new electric vehicles that VW is start building in 2020.

The I.D. CROZZ is the third I.D. concept, following the I.D. hatchback and I.D. BUZZ concepts. The I.D. CROZZ is based on the same MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform, but shows how the electric platform can be modified to create a crossover. According to VW, the concept is four-door coupe and sport utility vehicle, since it’s roofline is more coupe-like, like the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. The concept is also more compact and has a lower roofline than the new 2018 Tiguan.

The I.D. CROZZ has 302 horsepower, a top speed of 112 mph and can travel up to 311 miles on a single charge. Using a 150 kW fast charger, the battery can be recharged up to 80 percent within 30 minutes. The I.D. CROZZ is powered by two electric motors, one on each axle to give it all-wheel drive capability. In normal conditions, the rear 201-hp electric motor keeps the crossover moving, but if road conditions worsen, the front 101-hp electric motor is triggered. The I.D. CROZZ can also be permanently driven with all-wheel drive, for instance, when going off-road or in the snow.

“If it was ever possible to make a one-hundred percent certain prediction of what the future will look like, here it is. In 2017, we are showing how Volkswagen will be transforming the roadscape from 2020,” stated Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand. “For us, the three prototypes of this new generation of zero-emission vehicles—I.D., I.D. BUZZ and I.D. CROZZ—mark the start of a design and technology revolution that is going to change individual mobility and the Volkswagen brand forever.”

Just like the other I.D. concepts, the I.D. CROZZ also previews VW’s new autonomous driving technology, which VW predicts will arrive around 2025. In autonomous ‘I.D. Pilot’ mode the steering wheel retracts into the dashboard and fuses with the digitalized instruments to form a single unit.
