Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf GTI TCR concept, which is debuting at this year’s GTI Meeting at Wörthersee. The good news is that the Golf GTI TCR is more than just a concept, since it previews it’s headed to production later this year.
The VW Golf GTI TCR concept is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 286 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful GTI, yet. The four-cylinder is mated to a standard 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential. The Golf GTI TCR has a en electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph, but it can be increased to 164 mph by removing the electronic top-speed limiter.
In addition to the added power, the Golf GTI TCR concept gets 18-inch “Belvedere” forged aluminum-alloy wheels as standard, but 19-inch alloys will be an option. To bring the Golf GTI TCR to a stop, it packs large brake discs t with special calipers and pads. A special package is available that removes the speed limiter and adds 19-inch wheels, a sports chassis setting and DCC adaptive damping. The sport chassis setting allows the electronically adjustable dampers to be adjusted at the touch of a button and provides the option to choose between sporty, comfort or normal chassis settings.
To help it stand out from the standard GTI, The Golf GTI TCR concept gets a new front bumper that feeds air into the vehicle’s two additional radiators and also features a unique front splitter. The concept also gets a new side skirt extension and an optional GTI-style honeycomb trim for the side of the vehicle. Inside, the sport seats have unique microfiber and fabric covers, with a red central motif. When the doors are opened, the TCR logo is projected on to the ground and the stainless steel rocker trim has a red illuminated element.
“At the moment, the Golf GTI TCR Concept – an athlete derived from racing – is a study. But at the end of the year, we want to make this GTI vision come true,” stated Jürgen Stackmann, Sales, Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.
