VW Amarok trademark could mean a truck is headed to the U.S.

With the resurgence of the midsize truck segment in the United States, VW may soon want to grab its piece of the pie. VW has trademarked the Amarok name in the U.S., which is the name of the pickup that it offers in other markets around the world.

A recent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office could mean that Volkswagen may soon offer a rival to pickups, like the Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma and new Ford Ranger. The bad news is that this isn’t the first time that VW has trademarked the Amarok name in the United States, so it could mean nothing. Although there is a rumor that VW is working with Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles to produce a new pickup.

If VW does decide to introduce the VW Amarok here in the United States, it will it would likely have to be produced at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant to avoid the 25 percent Chicken Tax.

Back in 2009, VW said that the automaker would need to sell at least 100,000 Amarok pickups in the U.S. to make it worth it. Would U.S. buyers really buy that many VW pickups? Nearly a decade later, maybe VW has figured out a better way to bring the Amarok here.
