Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion concept debuts with Level 5 automation

Volkswagen has unveiled the fourth member of the electric I.D. family, the I.D. Vizzion concept, which is debuting this week at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on VW’s MEB platform, the Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion concept is a preview of a future VW electric sedan.

The I.D. Vizzion concept follows the introduction of the compact I.D.; the I.D. Crozz SUV; and the I.D. Buzz microbus, all of which have already been confirmed for production. We know that VW is planning more electric cars, so it’s expected that the I.D. Vizzion is a preview of an electric sedan. Beyond its sleek styling that looks similar to the I.D. Crozz, the I.D. Vizzion is VW’s first concept to feature level 5 autonomous driving capability.

Unlike the other concepts, there’s no steering wheel or pedals in the I.D. Vizzion. The concept’s “digital chauffeur” drives, steers and navigates autonomously in traffic, enabling passengers to sit back and enjoy the ride. The driver and passengers interact with the concept via voice and gesture controls. A virtual ‘host’ knows the personal preferences of the vehicle guests and it adapts to each of them individually.

The Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion concept is powered by two electric motors and a 111 kWh lithium-ion battery. The motor in front generates 101-hp, while a second motor at the rear adds 201-hp. The system generates a total 302 hp and has a range up to 413 miles on the European cycle.
