Following Nissan’s lead with the longer range Leaf, BMW is also rumored to be working on an update to the i3 electric car that will give it a driving range up to 124 miles on a single charge. Currently the fully electric i3 has can travel up to 81 miles, so the update would be significant.
According to sources that spoke with Autocar, the i3 is going to get an “optimized driveline” that will benefit from battery efficiency gains that have developed since the i3 was originally introduced. It will be powered by the same 22kWh, but a higher power density will give the i3 a longer driving range. The updated battery will also be applied to the i3 Range Extender and lastly if the rumors are correct, current i3 owners will be able to get the updated battery as a retro-fit option.
