Subaru has released two new versions of the WRX in Japan, the WRX S4 and WRX STI Type S. The WRX S4 is powered by a 296-hp 2.0L turbocharged, while the WRX STI Type S has 305-hp and 311 lb-ft. of torque.
Starting with the WRX S4 its 2.0L turbocharged engine has almost forty more horsepower than the U.S.-spec WRX and the power is sent to the ground via a standard CVT transmission and Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Sadly a six-speed manual transmission is not available. The WRX S4 also gets Subaru’s EyeSight driving assist system. Compared to the U.S. version, the WRX S4 has special front fender vents, new side sills, a revised front bumper, an integrated rear diffuser and new 18-inch wheels. Inside red stitching has been applied to seats.
The WRX STI Type S has the same 305-hp as the U.S. version, but it has 311 lb-ft. of torque, compared to only 290 in our version. It’s 2.0L turbocharged engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It also gets special front fender vents and unique 18-inch alloy wheels.
