Audi Sport, Audi’s new performance arm is reportedly working on a high-performance version of the upcoming Audi Q8 SUV. The Audi RS Q8 will rival other high performance SUVs, like the BMW X5 M.
“Today we have a product line-up which we are working on which will be expanded in more prestige segments and bodystyles which are sellable around the world, SUVs,” stated Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann.
Winkelmann stopped short of confirming the RS Q8, but he hinted that the high-performance Q8 will be the first model, instead of an RS Q7. “The Q7 is now in a phase of its lifecycle which, in my opinion, to be profitable is too late to step in,” said Winkelmann. “But a lot of markets are demanding bigger cars.”
Audi hasn’t revealed the flagship Q8 yet, but the Audi RS Q8 is expected to be close to the Audi Q8 Sport Concept that debuted earlier this year. It’s being reported that the RS Q8 will be powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder that’s mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The powertrain will generate around 470 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque, which is enough to give the SUV a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds.
