BMW has officially unveiled the highly anticipated 2015 BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe ahead of their debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show. The biggest news is that the new M3 and M4 models are lighter than the previous generation and get a new turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder engine with 425 horsepower.

Featuring a return to the inline six-cylinder engine, the all-new, 3.0-liter BMW M3 and M4 engine is not only lighter than its V-8 predecessor, but is also stronger. The new engine packs 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the M-DCT (dual clutch) transmission the M3 and M4 will reach 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, while the six-speed manual is a few ticks slower at 4.1 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

If you choose the M-DCT transmission you’ll also get an integrated Launch Control function that ensures optimum sprinting performance off the line, producing acceleration figures that would be out of range with the manual gearbox. Stability Clutch Control also opens the clutch when the car is understeering to bring it back into line.

Thanks to the use of more carbon fiber and aluminum BMW managed to cut around 176 pounds from the previous generation with the M4 Coupe weighing in at 3,300 pounds. The 2015 M3 and M4 also get a reworked suspension with lighter materials to reduce unsprung masses and also increase its rigidity.
