The electric car segment is on a roll right now with new entries, like the Tesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt, but it wasn’t long ago that the typical electric car was quirky with a short driving range. One such car is the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which arrived well before the first ever Tesla Model S, with the pre-production models driving around Japan back in 2007. Sadly 10 years later and the i-MiEV is now officially done.
The news isn’t too surprising, since Mitsubishi only sold a total 2,013 units in the US since it was introduced for the 2012 model year. Sales were so low that Mitsubishi even skipped the 2013 and 2015 model years. Most recently sales of the i-MiEV dropped to single digits per month.
There were several reasons why the Mitsubishi i-MiEV never took off like the Nissan Leaf. Its short 62 mile driving range was one of the biggest issues, but its overall size was probably even a bigger issue here in the SUV-loving United States.
Mitsubishi may be saying goodbye to the i-MiEV, but starting early next year, buyers will be able to finally get the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid. Emphasis on “finally” since the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid was originally supposed to arrive in the U.S. in 2013 as a 2014 model.
