MINI to release an electric car in 2019

MINI is going to introduce a new fully-electric model in late 2019, which will be its fifth core model, which, also known as “superheroes.” The new electric car will be much more than a typical “compliance” vehicle, since the brand plans to make it much more than a niche model.

MINI hopes the new electric car will help it regain market share.

“The electric car is not meant to just have an offering so you can say you have an electric car, but really nobody buys it,” Sebastian Mackensen, global head of MINI revealed during the New York Auto Show. “No, it’s a real car, and people will hopefully buy it.”

MINI hasn’t released any details about the new electric car, but Mini hopes that it will help regain the sales momentum that it’s lost over the last few years as more buyers move to crossovers. MINI sold 66,502 vehicles in 2013 in the US, but last year that number dropped to 52,030.

The new MINI electric car, won’t its the first EV, since back in 2009 MINI offered a fleet of MINI E models for lease.
