In less than two weeks Mercedes-Benz will officially pull the covers off the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class at the Detroit Auto Show. A few weeks ago Mercedes-Benz released officially photos of the interior and now we have photos of a camouflaged 2019 G-Class showing off how tough it is on the Schöckl, a 1,445 meter high local mountain near the Austrian city of Graz.
The 5.6 km “test track” includes gradients of up to 60 percent and lateral inclinations of up to 40 percent. During the development stage, a “G” has to endure over 2,000 strenuous kilometers on the course. While Mercedes-Benz isn’t ready to officially unveil the 2019 G-Class yet, it has revealed that it features a ladder-type frame, three 100-percent differential locks and a low range off-road ratio. Its suspension is the result of collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG. The result is an independent suspension with double-wishbone front axle in combination with a rigid rear axle.
The components of the double-wishbone front axle are directly fixed to the ladder-type frame without a suspension subframe. Plus the attachment points on the frame of the lower wishbone in a Z-direction are positioned as high up as possible.
We don’t know what powers the new G-Class, but its engines will be mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission. A new transfer case is flange-mounted directly on to the 9G-TRONIC transmission. The permanent all-wheel drive system sends 40 percent of the drive torque to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle.
The 2019 G-Class will feature lots of new tech features. A new 360° camera, reversing camera and three further cameras provide a bird’s eye view. The information is presented clearly in full HD in a choice of different views on the multimedia system’s display. Dynamic guide lines show the road and the width of the G-Class.
