Mazda’s first electric car is slated to arrive in 2020 and now we’re hearing that it won’t be based on any of Mazda’s current models. Instead it will be a unique standalone model, but we still don’t know if it will be an SUV, hatchback or something different.

While we don’t know which bodystyle the new Mazda electric car will have, it definitely won’t look funky or outlandish like some other electric cars. Mazda design chief Ikuo Maeda revealed to Autocar that its new electric car will have the same design language as the rest of the lineup. Mazda’s European design boss Jo Stenuit also stated, “We don’t want an EV to look like a fridge like some other car makers.”

Mazda has also confirmed that it will offer a range-extender version of its new electric car that will use a rotary engine. Mazda will also release its a plug-in hybrid by 2021.
