2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata horsepower upgrade is true

A few months ago it was reported that the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be getting a nice horsepower boost thanks to an additional 26 horsepower. Mazda has yet to reveal the US-spec 2019 MX-5 Miata, but Japan’s Car Watch recently got some time behind the wheel of the updated MX-5 Miata in Japan and the good news is that the reports are true.

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s 2.0L engine now generates 181 horsepower (184 PS), while its torque has increased slightly to 151 lb-ft, which is up from 148 lb-ft. To give the 2019 MX-5 Miata the extra power, the 2.0L engine received new lighter pistons and connecting rods, a larger diameter throttle body, wider exhaust piping and bigger exhaust valves. The redline has also been increased from 6,800 RPM to 7,500 RPM. Lastly a dual mass flywheel has also been added.

There are also some suspension tweaks with softer suspension bushings at the rear, which Mazda says will improve the roadster’s steering feel. Inside the biggest update is the addition of a telescoping steering wheel. It’s also being reported that the 2019 MX-5 Miata will finally get a rearview camera, while the CD player is getting deleted. Mazda’s Smart City Braking System will also be optional.

Mazda has yet to reveal the US-spec 2019 MX-5 Miata, so we will have to wait and see if it will also get some styling changes.
