Lincoln Aviator returns! Is it an Explorer based SUV?

Lincoln is officially bringing back the Aviator name for a new SUV that it’s going to reveal later this month at the New York Auto Show. The last time that Lincoln used the Aviator name it was for the Ford Explorer based SUV that was sold from 2002 to 2005, but it’s not known yet if the new SUV will again share its DNA with the Explorer.

Lincoln has released this teaser video of the new Aviator, but other than showing off a few design details, it’s hard to make out any big details. If the Aviator does again share its parts with the Explorer, we can expect it to be powered by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, but the more efficient 2.0L turbo could also be a possibility.

While the likely option is that the Aviator will be a three-row SUV based on the Explorer, what if Lincoln has decided to rename the MKC as the Aviator? It’s just another option, since Lincoln is finally ditching its horrible naming convention for memorable names. We won’t get all the official details until the Aviator debuts on March 28.

We’re excited to see that Lincoln is bringing back the Aviator name, but at the same time we’re also a little disappointed that a new report claims that the Lincoln Continental is going away.
