Kia to debut 48-volt diesel mild-hybrid powertrain

Several automakers, like Audi and Mercedes-Benz have started to add 48-volt mid hybrid systems to their existing powertrains and now Kia has announced plans to introduce its own mild hybrid this year. The new mild-hybrid system, called “EcoDynamics+” features an electric motor and 48-volt battery that works in tandem with the diesel engine to reduce emissions and improve the powertrains efficiency.

The 48-volt mild hybrid system will be offered initially in Europe under the hood of the Kia Sportage. The system uses a compact 0.46 kWh 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a new Mild-Hybrid Starter-Generator (MHSG). The system switches seamlessly between two modes: motor and generator. Under acceleration the mild hybrid system provides up to 10kW of electric power assistance to the powertrain in “motor” mode, while in “generator” mode, the system harvests kinetic energy from the vehicle during in-gear deceleration and braking and uses the power to recharge the batteries.

The EcoDynamics+ diesel mild-hybrid powertrain will help Kia offer cleaner and more frugal diesel engines. The system is paired with Kia’s Selective Catalytic Reduction active emissions control technology that reduces CO2 emissions by up to four percent on the new Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), and up to seven per cent on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

The mild hybrid system will eventually expanded for use beyond just diesel engines, which means that we’ll likely see it bolted onto a gas engine in the U.S. in the not too distant future.
