A year ago GMC chief Duncan Aldred announced a goal to improve GMC’s market share by two-thirds over the next decade to around 5 percent from the current 3 percent. While the announcement was announced in March 2015, since then not much has changed, but GMC may have something in the works that will help it rival Jeep.
According to sources, GMC is currently working on a new body-on-frame SUV that will borrow parts from the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickups. The new more rugged SUV would not only give GMC a Jeep rival, but would also mark a milestone for the brand, since the new body-on-frame SUV would not have a cousin with a Chevy badge – unlike the rest of the GMC brand.
The body-on-frame GMC would also be a rival to the rumored new Ford Bronco, which is expected to arrive around 2020. GMC hasn’t confirmed anything, but if the new SUV does get the green light it also won’t arrive until around 2020.
