2017 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee diesels back on sale

The EPA has given Chrysler the approval to resume selling the diesel-powered versions of the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fiat Chrysler has announced that it has received a certificate of conformity from the EPA and a conditional executive order from the Air Resources Board of the State of California.

Although the 2017 model year is almost over, it has taken several months for the automaker and the EPA and ARB to address the agencies’ concerns with the diesel emissions control technologies used on earlier model-year versions of the Ram 1500 and Grand Cherokee. The 2017 updates include modified emissions software calibrations, with no required hardware changes and FCA also expects that the modified calibrations will have no effect on the fuel economy or performance.

“The approvals announced today represent a significant step toward resolving the issues raised by EPA and ARB,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer of FCA US and FCA. “We appreciate the efforts of the agencies in working with us to achieve this milestone. We are anxious to build on this progress to make appropriate updates to the emissions control software in our earlier model-year vehicles.”

Both models are powered by a 3.0L diesel V6 engine with 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque. The 2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is rated at 21/29 mpg, while the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel is rated at 22/30 mpg.
